Inspired by my personal lei of choice, this new design features the lei kūpeʻe. From gathering and cleaning to drilling and stringing, assembling a lei from these beautiful shells is a long and arduous task. Kūpeʻe receive their name from the ʻōlelo noʻeau, "kū i ka pō, peʻe i ka lā," which translates to "stand in the night, hide during the day." This proverb is in reference to their nocturnal nature; they only come out at night under certain moons and at certain places. Lei kūpeʻe are prized for these reasons.
